If you are reading this, you probably want to know what the deal is:
Do I think I'm the next Ansel Adams?
No. I don't even like to say I'm a "photographer" since I despise most of the people that title themselves thusly. Anyone who thinks they are the next _any_ photographer ... isn't. I like to take pictures is all.
Do I think I am the next Hunter S. Thompson?
No, I have taken far too many drugs to be that good of a writer. ;)
Do I think I'm the next ... *insert popular web-designer here*?
I can only dream to be this good some day.
instantkamera.ca:
instantkamera was written and designed by hand in vim and TheGIMP by yours truely. The site is as compliant with CSS(2.1) and XHTML(1.1) as possible, given that a large portion of the site is powered (and the markup thus generated) by third parties. Will it validate?
No.
Do I care?
No.
Are there hacks for different browsers that break standard?
No, none that I have control over.
Did you test your site in my browser?
No, that's YOUR job.
Honestly, I HAVE tested most browsers from IE to lynx. BUT, if you use something like IE6 and it doesn't work, don't bother complaining to me. Please get with the 21st century, then call me back.
OK, well tell me more ...
SURE! While the graphical layout and concept was my own, I could not have completed the job without the creativity and inspiration of others:
Fittingly (following the 'pixel' theme), the color palette is "Pixel Valley Palette" @ ColorLovers.
The font used to create the logos is "Unibody 8" by Underware.nl. Props to FontSquirrel.com for introducing me to that, and other, great free/fair use fonts.
Primary hosting for instantkamera.ca is with "Nearly Free Speech". These guys are an amazing UNIX-based webhost with great support for different technologies, excellent tools for administration, a fair (and scalable) billing structure and an honourable privacy policy.
No I don't work for these guys. In fact, I haven't even been with them that long, but they were on the short-list the LAST time I was choosing a hosting company. Although my previous host was also very good, Nearly Free Speech is just the perfect fit for a F/OSS advocate like myself.
Additionally (in case you didn't notice), blog.instantkamera.ca is hosted freely on Google's Blogger, and images.instantkamera.ca is newly hosted on SmugMug. Both were chosen because they are highly customizable, allowing me to keep design AND domain consistency.
Everything else:
I have used a variety of kit over the years, but my biggest change recently has been achieving a completely free/open source software workflow. At some point (when I am satisfied that it works for me) I will post a blog about this. For now, here are the basics:Cameras:
- Nikon 'D90'
- Nikon 'D50'

Hardware:
- AMD PhenomII x6 1090T (3.2Ghz)
- 16G DDR3 RAM

Software:
- Arch Linux distribution - I work with Linux distros of all kinds, but the ONLY one I care to run on my own systems is Arch.
- darktable - Until recently I had been try to work digiKam into my otherwise KDE-less life. This software is a godsend to open-source photographers.
- imageMagick - An excellent suite of (batch) image processing tools.
- ArgyllCMS/dispcalGUI - Colour management/profiling/calibration software. Whichever software you use with your calibrator, this is better.
- Chromium - I prefer Chrome/Chromium to Firefox.
- Vim - THE text editor.
- Mercurial - Great source code management/revision control system. In fact, I'm using it to track this site as it (inevitably) changes.
